Horizon Étendu is a Composition Academy that offers a six-month study programme for aspiring composers who wish to develop their composition skills and embark on the path of a professional artistic career. As part of the program, students have the opportunity to work with renowned composers on their own music and explore aspects of technique, notation, instrumental writing and concept development. The Academy also offers consultations, lectures with guest composers and artistic coaching from the programme's mentors. In addition, the selected participants will work on creating a new composition for the Academy ensembles in residence, which will be professionally recorded at the end of the academy programme.
Moreover, as a part of this academy and under the supervision of the performers of the ensembles the students of the conservatoire of Nice will work on the new compositions composer.
Horizon Étendu est une académie de composition qui a pour but de faciliter l’accès des jeunes compositrices et compositeurs émergeant.e.s et diplômé.e.s, au réseau professionnel de la création musicale. Cette académie accompagne ses participants dans leurs démarches d’insertion dans les écosystèmes de la scène artistique à l’échelle internationale. Elle facilite l’échange avec les professionnels et suscite la rencontre entre différentes générations d’artistes, tout en valorisant la diversité culturelle, la mixité et la parité des genres. Horizon Étendu se déroule en deux volets : dans un premier temps les participants bénéficient à distance des conseils des compositeurs-enseignants internationaux dans le but de composer une nouvelle œuvre. Dans un deuxième temps ils auront l’occasion de travailler avec les interprètes professionnels, dans l’objectif de créer et enregistrer les œuvres composées.
Un autre aspect important de cette édition consiste en la collaboration entre les participants de l’académie et les jeunes interprètes du conservatoire de Nice qui souhaitent d’élargir leur expérience dans le domaine de la création et la collaboration compositeur-interprète.
L’édition 2023 de Horizon Étendu met en avant le travail des compositrices et des compositeurs iranien.ne.s qui vivent et travaillent dans le pays et à l'étranger. Les participants seront sélectionnés sur dossier par un comité de lecture. Ils commenceront leurs cours à l’automne 2023. Les œuvres seront interprétées et enregistrées début 2025.

Before applying please read this notice carefully !
The Composition Academy is run through the Zoom platform.
The individual development meetings and group sessions with lecturers and leading composers will take place during six sessions. The Horizon Étendu Composition Academy will host renowned composers: Dieter Ammann, Helga Arias, Jean-Luc Hervé, Pierre Jodlowsky, Philippe Manoury and Lidia Zielińska, who will guide the composition students in their process of composing new works for the programme's resident ensembles: Ensemble Inicia ! and Spectro Duo.
The varied programme of pedagogical activities also includes lecture events with invited musicians and composers oriented towards contemporary music practise. Their artistic practice and experience in the field offers an enriching potential to inform and develop through different perspectives on the situation of contemporary music today. In addition, each active composition student can have a programme mentor throughout the duration of the Academy to help with questions, logistics and unexpected problems. There will also be an online Common Room where participants can meet, relax and chat during breaks between classes and workshops.
Thanks to the generous support of IRCAM, with a very low budget, active participants can have a one year access to all the technologies developed within IRCAM and their associated resources, as well as the different MaxMSP libraries, a space for discussion and exchange through the discussion forum. In three words, a network for experimentation, sharing and creation.
The advantage of the Horizon Étendu Composition Academy is that courses are conducted online, allowing aspiring composers from Iran to attend the professional composition course without having to travel abroad.
All private courses and seminars will be held in English.
Programme Information
Participation in the Academy Horizon Étendu is divided into two categories:

Active participants: A maximum of fifteen active participants who work on the development of a new composition for the duration of the Academy and receive individual composition lessons with professors.

Auditors/non-active participants: Those who have not been selected for active participation in the composition academy will be given the opportunity to attend the academy as auditors. It is also possible to apply to become an auditor of the academy independently of active participation procedure. Auditors gain access to all educational events online throughout the academic season.
In addition, the programme includes 8 public online lectures open to both active and non-active participants.
Participation
All Iranian aspiring composers from all over the world are welcome to apply for Composition Academy.
The scholarships are awarded to the successful candidates, who live in Iran, and get accepted as active participants in the course.
Auditors may not apply for a scholarship
Application for auditors/non-active participation is open to all nationalities, without any requirement or jury evaluation.

Timeline
All applications are submitted online through the online form. Applications are reviewed by a jury panel consisting of the academy mentors, professors and ensemble in residence members.
It is possible to apply for electronic pieces.
Application requirements for active participation:
- A 1-page idea for a new composition explaining the concept, form and use of instruments in the new piece.
- Two (2) scores in PDF format with accompanying audio (optional but recommended). Both compositions should be written for an instrumentation of 2 - 8 instruments and should demonstrate the applicant's chamber music composing skills.*
- 2 audio files of your previous electronic works.**
- Resume or CV in PDF format.
- A proof of paid application fee in PDF format.
- Completed online application form.
All application materials must be submitted in English.
Applications and submissions must be received by 31.10.2023. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.
To apply for the academy's full scholarship, additional application materials are required:
- A letter of motivation in English explaining why the participant wishes to receive a scholarship to the Composition Academy.
- Two letters of recommendation from the composition professors.
As a final evaluation of the process to receive the scholarship, a short interview with the shortlisted group of applicants will take place via Zoom platform.
Participants will receive a letter of confirmation that they have been awarded the full scholarship for the programme, or an offer of a half scholarship or participation with full payment after the results are announced by 15.11.2023. Those not selected as active participants will be offered the opportunity to participate as auditors. The decisions of the jury are final and are not open to discussion.

Participants can choose three different instrumentations in order of priority. The board of the academy makes its best efforts to keep the chosen instrumentation. In case for some reason none of those options is available the closest available instrumentation will be assigned.
Instruments:
Flute, clarinet, saxophone, voice and small percussions*, piano, viola, electric guitar, electronics**.

Objects: various percussive objects performance through amplification - according to the project.

ENSEMBLES IN RESIDENCE
Inicia ! is a collective of musicians dedicated to creative music.
The ensemble wishes to respond to a growing demand for a more attractive public presentation of creative music. Inicia ! defends "living" music and wants the concert to be staged and make a new relationship with the audience, in particular through music and digital technologies. Our intention is therefore to surround ourselves, in addition to performing musicians, with various artists from other disciplines: directors, choreographers, authors, scenographers, videographers... sharing with us this desire to seek a more attractive communication than a mere traditional concert.
Ensemble Inicia
Spectro Duo began its work in 2013 and consists of two composers and performers, Martyna Kosecka (voice, keys, sound objects, electronics, video) and Idin Samimi Mofakham (alto saxophone, electric guitar, sound objects, electronics).
Their musical focus is on drones, noise, beating phenomena, glitches, field recording transformation, microtonality and non-western tuning systems.
As part of their journey, Spectro Duo had performances as an ensemble in many international festivals, such as Vårfest in Norway (2023), Hashtag Lab in Warsaw (2023), Extreme Chill Festival in Iceland (2019), MUSICACOUSTICA-BEIJING (2018), Ars Electronica Festival Linz (2017), Unlimited Access in Iran (2016) and IMPULS 9th International Ensemble and Composers Academy and Festival (2015) as well as production of several single fixed media tracks published by Unexplained Sounds Group (Italy) and Noise à Noise (Iran).
